Broadway Broncos to Perform `Legally Blonde’ on a National Stage in 2013

Submitted by MISD

McKinney Boyd High School’s Broadway Broncos will take their theatrical production of “Legally Blonde” on the road this summer to perform before a national audience at the high school theatre event of the year — the Fiftieth Festival of the International Thespian Society, held in Lincoln, Nebraska.

More than 70 students from McKinney Boyd High School will present the musical “Legally Blonde” during the week of June 24 – 29 on the festival main stage in front of nearly 5,000 theatre students and professionals from across the United States and Canada.

Invitation to perform at the festival is one of the most coveted honors among high school theatre programs; the inclusion of the McKinney Boyd production is a first for McKinney — and a tremendous accomplishment for any theatre group. Annually, high school shows throughout the United States and Canada are evaluated for possible inclusion in the festival, with only the top 8 to 10 shows receiving an invitation. This year the Broadway Broncos are among the honored few.

“I am incredibly proud of the company of ‘Legally Blonde,'” said Vicki Kirkley, McKinney Boyd High School Director of Theatre.

“It has been a privilege to work with amazingly talented students and watch them grow through this production process. The Broadway Broncos have been working to raise the bar for theatre in our community and this invitation shows that we are well on our way as we strive for excellence,” she said.

Along with the chance to showcase student talent in front of an audience of thousands, the festival week offers a wealth of learning opportunities for students and educators in the form of workshops and master classes, a student leadership program, auditions for college admission, Thespian scholarships, the Thespian Playworks student playwriting program and much more.

The cost involved in transporting and providing accommodations for 70 students on a 6 day trip along with the equipment and supplies required to produce a large-scale musical are quite substantial, so the Broadway Broncos will be hard at work over the next few months to raise the funds that will make it happen. Anyone interested in donating to their effort can contact Vicki Kirkley at vkirkley@mckinneyisd.net.
