The Red Velvet Cake War, that is.
Warm up your winter as Allen’s Community Theatre promises to take you back to hotter-than-heck-July with a hilarious comedy about three cousins and their epic battle to put on the best family reunion ever. The Red Velvet Cake War by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten takes place in fictional Sweetgum, Texas and pits the three cousins against their ornery aunt in order to save one of them from the funny farm.
Even though charges against Gaynelle Verdeen Bodeen (Gena Graham) were dismissed as accidental for crashing through her ex-husband’s girlfriend’s double-wide, he still wants to prove she is crazy. Her cousins Peaches (Nancy Lubertazzo) and Jimmie Wyvette (Kathleen Vaught) come up with a scheme to prove her sanity by hosting a family reunion in honor of their Great Uncle Aubrey’s (Mel Tolle) 90th birthday.
After Gaynelle makes a TV guest appearance on “Hospitality House” starring the one and only Cee Cee Windam (Nancy Cecco), things get out of hand when Gaynelle challenges their mean Aunt LaMerle (Marilynn Tolle) to a cake baking duel with high stakes. The local bait-shop owner, Newt Blaylock (Braden Jones) sets his eye on Gaynelle, only to be chased by the court appointed psychologist Elsa Dowdall (Robyn Mead) and Peaches whose husband has long been missing. Jimmie Wyvette dukes it out with the prissy neighbor Bitsy Hargis (Rosanna Leahy) for the town’s most eligible recent widower.
Throw in some nasty Texas weather, a clumsy sheriff, and a couple of 90-year-old lovebirds and you’ve got the makings for one of the wackiest family reunions you’ve ever attended!
The Red Velvet Cake War is directed by Robin Daffinee Coulonge and is the second show in Allen’s Community Theatre inaugural season.
