McKinney North senior keeper Justin Bach prevented what would have been an otherwise disastorous squandering of an early lead on Friday versus Dension. But it wasn’t in the way that hardly anyone might expect.
Bach beat Denison keeper Beau Hester in the eighth round of a shootout and North salvaged a victory over the Yellow Jackets in a District 17-4A boys match at North. The Bulldogs (7-6-0, 4-2-0) scored twice in the first six minutes of the match. But midfield lapses helped lead to two Denison goals in the first half. Neither team scored in the second half.
Sean Martineau took a long crossing pass from Ricardo Gonzalez and scored just 47 seconds into the match. Thanks to Justin Adler’s pass, Morgan Dizney made it 2-0 on a close strike less than three minutes later.
But the Bulldogs gave up a nifty header by the Jackets’ Hayden Cottingame in the 18th minute. Denison’s Brandt Krasovic put a rebound back into an empty net with just 1:45 left before halftime.
In the shootout, freshman Kyle Biggio kept the Bulldogs alive with a goal. Tied at one, both teams missed on their next three chances. Bach stopped all three shots, including an up-close blast from Rian Conrad that temporarily put the North keeper out of commission. After Diego Burgos’ shot hit the post, Bach stopped one more Yellow Jacket before striking the game-winner.
In the junior varsity match, Jacob Maclea scored twice and Zac Helms notched a pair of assists in the Bulldogs’ 4-0 shutout.
