In a battle for second place in District 10-4A, McKinney North gained revenge on McKinney High with an 82-66 home victory Friday night. The Lions had won a double-overtime game between these teams, 87-81, on Jan. 3 at MHS.
McKinney North 82, McKinney High 66: A sellout crowd greeted these teams at North. The Bulldogs, trailing MHS by a game in the district, evened the score. A ferocious 10-0 Bulldog run to begin the ballgame essentially crushed the Lion’s morale, and the Dawgs never let up. By first quarters end, North had captured a 26-10 lead thanks to dominating performances by senior forward Zan Ridley and sophomore guard Julion Pierre. But that wasn’t the worst news for McKinney High.
Lions senior guard AJ Moutry, averaging just over 27 points per game, this season, left the game on crutches early in the first quarter with a high ankle sprain (according to Moutry, he will be on the mend 1-2 weeks). In spite of this, with the help of senior forward Raynell Denny’s imposing offensive presence, McKinney High was able to assemble a mid-second quarter comeback, closing the Bulldog lead to eight points. However, hopes of a Lion rebound were stuffed by the relentless North defense. The halftime score was 42-30, McKinney North.
From then on, thanks in part to a 32-point performance by Julion Pearre, the Bulldogs led all 32 minutes of the game. Jola Otubu added 13, Collin Curran 12 and Alex Pelton 11 for the Bulldogs.
Jonathan Shannon led MHS with 20 points and Raynell Denny added 18. Tanner Holland scored 14.
The Lions (7-2, T-2 in district play) face off against JJ Pearce (3-5, T-4 in district) this Tuesday, Jan. 31, at home, while the Bulldogs (7-2, T-2 in district play) face district leader Highland Park (9-0) Tuesday at Highlander Field House.
