McKinney Boyd’s dramatic last-minute victory against Plano Senior two weeks ago has helped catapult head football coach Don Drake as a finalist for coach of the week.
Drake was named a finalist on behalf of the Texas Army National Guard/Dallas Cowboys coach of the week award for week seven of the 2013 season.
Drake was instrumental in calling plays during Boyd’s comeback victory, which saw Curtis Ladd connect with Dedrick Scrivens for a 97-yard touchdown pass to give Boyd the 24-23 victory in the final minute.
Drake said it’s an honor to be nominated, but he gives all the credit to his athletes for making the plays and being coachable.
“It’s a definite honor, but it’s something that happened because our kids are doing a great job,” he said.
Drake will be eligible to win a $2,000 grant for the Boyd football program on behalf of Gene and Jeryy Jones Family Charities and the Dallas Cowboys.
Voting started Tuesday and will conclude Thursday. Visit www.dallascowboys.com to vote on the finalists for coach of the week.
