The McKinney Boyd freshman girls basketball team recently won the championship at the 16-team McKinney High Freshman Tournament.
The Lady Broncos opened play by beating Wylie East 51-9, then fought off Plano McMillen’s B-team 36-24. And with these two wins under their belt, the Lady Broncos entered Saturday into the Gold Championship Bracket.
After a struggle to stay on top during the second half against Plano Clark, Boyd fought hard to finish with a win of 37-27. This advanced the Lady Broncos to the championship game against a talented Plano McMillen A-team.
Plano McMillen A had proven themselves throughout the entire tournament. They cleaned the floor battling each team they played with wins well over a difference of 15-20 points. However, when Boyd stood with the Lions toe-to-toe, they backed down. This was such a nail-biter game with a halftime score of 20-16 and staying within 4-6 points the entire first half. Allowing the Lions to make a 16-6 scoring run during the 3rd quarter, the Lady Broncos captured the 4th quarter to come out on top with an incredible win 37-35.
Top scorers were Lauren Breazeale with 19 points and a crucial 3 pointer in the fourth quarter. Jordan Helterbrand also contributed 11 points with outside shots as well as driving the paint and drawing fouls. Also scoring were Olivia Adkins, Katie Hogarth, and Nicole Hartford with 2 points each and Z Taylor with 1 point. Defensively, Jada Beasley, Victoria Parish, and Mackinzie Wing were on their “A” game with their defensive efforts causing the Lions to turn the ball over as we were able to capture the 4th quarter.
