Bike the Bricks is one of the most exciting events to zoom through downtown McKinney. With action so close and speeds up to 40 mph, spectators of this “crit” race in historic downtown will feel the wind generated by the cyclists racing by blowing their hair back.
This free, family-friendly event brought to us by the City of McKinney and McKinney Velo happens this Friday, May 24, with cyclers warming up beginning at 3:30 p.m. With more than 500 cyclers from around the state and beyond competing for $20,000 plus prize money, it’s sure to be an exciting night for the thousands of guests expected to visit the historic downtown area. Festival hours are from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., so there will be more than enough time to enjoy the races and all this event has to offer.
According to the City of McKinney, Bike the Bricks will take place rain or shine, so dress accordingly. Parking will be found throughout downtown McKinney, but be aware that the parking lot east of Mitchell Park, Church St. from Louisiana St. to Virginia St. will be blocked all race-day, as will all parking spaces on the race route. Also be aware that after 1:30 p.m. through traffic will be redirected to outer lots in the downtown area. If you have a parked vehicle within the event perimeter after 2 p.m. it will be towed, so be sure to keep an eye on the clock.
This year’s route will see cyclists taking off from in front of The Pub on West Virginia St. They will then proceed west to College St. At College, they will turn left and continue to Louisiana St. A left on Louisiana will take them to Tennessee St where they will zoom left onto Hunt St. At Kentucky they will hang a right on Virginia St. at mind-blowing speeds to the finish line.
Throughout the evening, spectators can grab a drink and a bite to eat at any of the downtown eateries or from the beer garden that will be set up at Kentucky and Virginia. For the kids, there will be plenty of activities including spring-free trampoline fun until dark-thirty or so. The TownSquareBuzz.com Studio on Kentucky St. will be open with a front row view of the action. Stop by to say hello.
