Denton Ryan’s Teana Ogden put up an impressive game-high 27 points versus McKinney Boyd in Tuesday night’s season opener. The Lady Broncos, on the other hand, didn’t have any one player put up 20 points but rather demonstrated a more team-oriented style of basketball and came out on top 53-42 to start the year with a 1-0 record.
“We stepped out tonight and it was a good first win for us,” Boyd girls basketball coach Bretagne Galbreath said.
Junior post Julia Hendrieth led the way for McKinney Boyd’s offense with 19 points. She was followed by the Lady Broncos’ lone senior Seanna Arredondo, who totaled 10 points for the night and more than a handful of steals, which helped spark Boyd’s transition offense.
“I thought we all worked really well together. It was a tough one,” Arredondo said. “We started off slow but we finished strong.”
Painted on the wall of McKinney Boyd’s gymnasium are the words “Let ‘Em Run”, but Arredondo didn’t think the Lady Broncos basketball team did much running on the floor last season.
“We were more of a set team,” she said.
This season, Arredondo feels that the Lady Broncos have more heart, more chemistry, and are more of a running team than they were in 2010-2011. With only one senior player on her varsity basketball team, Galbreath is expecting a great deal of leadership from Arredondo on and off the floor.
“She has the ability to look up the floor and get good passes to her teammates,” Galbreath said. “I’m looking for her to be a leader. She’s a hard worker and I’m proud of the effort she gave tonight.
As a team, the Lady Broncos were 20-of-39 from the field with most of those points coming off of transition layups. Other scorers for Boyd included Haley Curruthers (8), Charmaine Celestine (7), Rochelle Vasquez (4), Micaela Gonzalez (3), and Mariah Richardson (2).
Galbreath was pleased with her team’s ability to score on the run but she couldn’t ignore the fact that her girls committed 25 turnovers versus a Denton Ryan defense that is nowhere near the level of toughness her squad will face in district play.
“We’ve got to key in and fine tune some things like taking care of the basketball,” Galbreath said. “The pressure wasn’t as great as the teams we’re going to see.”
McKinney Boyd will enter the Frisco ISD Tip-Off Classic on Thursday. The tournament will end on Saturday. Next Tuesday, the Lady Broncos return home for a regular season game versus Lake Dallas starting at 7:30 p.m.
