One round of the UIL Baseball State Tournament is in the books, and both the McKinney High Lions and McKinney North Bulldogs have advanced to the Area round later this week. TSB previews both series as the two McKinney teams look to advance to the Regional Quarterfinal round with series win:
McKinney Lions (8-7 in 10-5A, 19-11 overall) vs. Rockwall Yellowjackets (9-3 in 12-5A, 27-6 overall)
Game 1: Friday, 7:30 p.m. @ Frisco Dr. Pepper Ballpark
Game 2: Saturday, 11 a.m. @ Lewisville High School
Game 3 (if necessary): Saturday, 2 p.m. @ Lewisville High School
Lions Notes: Defeated Jesuit 2-0 in Bi-district best-of-three series last week. Won game one 6-5 and game two 9-7 in 10 innings… Brad Vassar earned the game one win last Thursday, throwing six innings and allowing five earned runs. Vassar threw 111 pitches and only recorded a first pitch strike on 12 of the 26 batters he faced… Nathan Ahsam earned the game two win in relief, going five innings and allowing zero earned runs. He did walk five hitters, as the Jesuit Rangers forced nine walks in the game… Trevor Duggan finished with three RBIs in the series, the most on the team… McKinney has not played at Dr. Pepper Ballpark this season.
Rockwall Notes: The Yellowjackets finished second in District 12-5A behind Rockwall-Heath… Rockwall defeated Rowlett 4-1 in a one-game playoff in the Bi-district round last week at Wylie High School. Carter Lilly earned the win on the mound. Brad Barnett, Garrett Moon, and Kendall Coleman all recorded doubles in the win… Rockwall has three players with 20 or more RBIs, including Coleman (25), Cole Ballew (24), and Dustin Angiel (22)… Coleman leads the team with three home runs… Three players have at least 44 innings pitched: Carson Adams, Alec Vice, and Lilly. Vice is 5-1 with a 1.36 ERA, Adams is 6-2 with a 1.58 ERA, and Lilly is 5-1 with a 2.20 ERA… Rockwall has not lost a game since Apr. 6 versus Mesquite Horn.
What it Means: The winner of Rockwall-MHS faces the winner of Plano-Longview in the Regional Quarterfinals.
McKinney North (13-1 in 13-4A, 26-2 overall) vs. Waxahachie Indians (10-4 in 15-4A, 20-7 overall)
Series: One-game playoff
Game 1: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at QwikTrip Park in Grand Prairie
Bulldogs Notes: North defeated Mt. Pleasant 2-1 in Bi-district best-of-three series last weekend. North won game one 6-2, Mt. Pleasant won game two 4-1, and North won the deciding game three 16-3 on Saturday… Gabe Constantine earned the game one win, going 5.1 innings and allowing one earned run. He struck out eight and walked four. Anthony Herrera earned the save, throwing the final 1.2 innings and allowing zero runs. He threw 83% strikes (10 strikes in 12 pitches)… Julian Pope picked up the game two loss on the mound, throwing a complete game and allowing zero earned runs. North committed four errors defensively in the loss… Herrera picked up the game three win in relief of Clayton Trout, throwing the final 4.1 innings and allowing zero runs. He threw 75.6% strikes (34 in 45)… Preston Speers had team-high five RBIs in the series while Constantine finished with four RBIs, all of which came in game three… Herrera had team-high seven hits, while Travis Scalf finished second with four hits.
Waxahachie Notes: Waxahachie finished third in District 15-4A behind Mansfield Legacy and Mansfield Summit… The Indians defeated Corsicana 2-1 in the Bi-district best-of-three series last week. Won game one 6-1, lost game two 10-3, and won the deciding game three 6-3… Sammy Ernst, Taylor Bright, and David Martinelli all recorded home runs in the game three win. Martinelli also earned the win on the mound in the game… The Indians have won 11 of their last 15 games… Lost in the Regional Semifinals last season to Frisco Wakeland 2-1 in a best-of-three series.
What it Means: The winner of North-Waxahachie faces the winner of Nacogdoches-Pine Tree in the Regional Quarterfinals.
