Award Winning Film to Screen at Angelika Plano

Submitted by Equality Texas

Award-Winning Film to Screen at Angelika Plano on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 – Benefit for Equality Texas.

The North Texas Premier of OUT IN THE SILENCE, “a stunning documentary” (Philadelphia Inquirer) about the harrowing, ultimately successful battle of a gay teen and his mother against recalcitrant school authorities when the teen is brutally attacked for coming out in his small western Pennsylvania high school, is scheduled for Wednesday May 30, 6:30pm at the Angelika Plano, Shops @ Legacy 7205 Bishop Road Plano Texas 75024.

The screening will be preceded by a coffee and sweets reception sponsored by Bonnie Ruth’s Bistro Francais Et Patisserie and a short Welcoming Schools film titled What do you Know? Tickets are just $12 ($15 at the door) and available at www.EqualityTexas.org, Event Calendar.

Net proceeds from the event will go to Equality Texas, the only non-partisan statewide political advocacy organization lobbying the Texas legislature for the elimination of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

“The characters in the film are just ordinary people – a kid and his mom, two women who start a business, an Evangelical preacher and his wife – but their stories get at the heart of how anti-Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender stigma and repression continue to harm individuals and divide communities,” said film maker Joe Wilson. “That’s why we’re using it as part of a grassroots campaign for fairness and equality in America.”

Event organizers Jeanne Rubin and Lisa Mashigian are hoping that the benefit attracts people from across the spectrum in North Texas ready and willing to engage in constructive dialogue, including students, parents and educators, clergy, health and social service providers, civic leaders and elected officials, and all those concerned about the well-being of all in the community.

Thanks to individual and corporate sponsors for allowing us to keep tickets affordable to everyone: Dawnetta Miller & Blue Martinez, Henry Jimenez & Delfino Rodriguez, Dr Chele Doone & Judy Holderby, Michael Wren, Judith Kaufman, HRC Welcoming Schools, Dana Jones & Raven Woodard, Bonnie Ruth Ianace, Jay Forte, Kelley & Helen Van Auken, Lynn Tanksley & Michael Alves, Jennifer Kimble, Barb Walters, BB&T, PeopleCallingPeople.com and Collin County Gay & Lesbian Alliance.
