Auteur Film Series to Present `Pan’s Labyrinth’

pan's labyrinthCollin College’s Auteur Film Series will screen “Pan’s Labyrinth” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19 at the Angelika Film Center in Plano.

The free screening, part of this year’s “Abandoned by Reason: Six Great Fantasy Films” theme, tells the story of a girl named Ofelia, whose fragile mother has married Capt. Vidal, a militant supporter of Spanish leader Francisco Franco. While Vidal tortures the rebels, Ofelia enters a world of dangerous magic through her backyard labyrinth.

Film series director Dr. Carolyn Perry said fantasy is filled with characters living without the safe boundaries that make up mundane “reality.”

“The inner worlds of these characters are wracked with loneliness, grief and fear,” Perry said. “Fantasy allows us to watch these orphans enter their inner worlds where they hone themselves into weapons or wizards and then re-emerge to take on the hostile outer worlds they fled.”

Doors open 30 minutes before the film begins, and seating is limited. Some material may not be suitable for all audiences.

Each film will be followed by a panel discussion led by Collin College faculty and staff. The series supports the college’s core values of learning, creativity and involvement by engaging students through film and discussion.
