The America’s Favorite Farmers Market Contest will end September 3rd at midnight and Sulphur Springs has surged ahead knocking McKinney out of the No. 1 spot in Texas.
“We were completely blind-sided,” said Cindy Johnson, Market Manager. “We were solidly in the No. 1 spot and all the markets were plodding ahead with daily votes, then all of a sudden on Thursday Sulphur Springs started logging 500+ votes each day.”
The annual contest, sponsored by American Farmland Trust, is a way for Farmers Markets across the country to have a friendly competition for the “best” Farmers Market in their state and in the country.
“Last year we were 3rd in Texas and 5th in the country,” said Johnson. “Of course, after the citation from Money Magazine that McKinney is the second best place to live in the country we had hoped to stay at the 2nd place spot in the country as a Farmers Market.”
Right now the Historic McKinney Farmers Market is No. 2 in Texas and No. 4 in the U.S.
“Your vote really counts,” said Elaine Bay, volunteer and head cheerleader for the market. “If Sulphur Springs can get 500 votes each day, we should be able to log 1,000. This is the greatest market…we get told that each Saturday by people from all over Texas and the US that come to the market.”
While it’s fun to compete for bragging rights to the top spots, there are other reasons to compete in the contest.
“We get copies of all the comments that people make about our market and we use those comments to understand what people like and what we can do better,” said Johnson. “It helps with grant requests and to promote the market. And after wiping the tears from my eyes each year from reading the comments we get I think that we would win for sure if the contest was based on comments and not votes. People love our vendors and our market.”
