Town Square Buzz is the first to announce that Taylor Hicks, one of the most recognizable and adored singers from TV’s monster hit American Idol, will perform at McKinney Performing Arts Center on September 17 at 8:00 pm. Tickets for this sure to be sold-out show will go on-sale beginning July 1 at www.mckinneyperformingartscenter.org.
Hicks’ performance in McKinney is the culminating activity for the McKinney Mash Up, McKinney’s own take on Idol. The McKinney Mash Up is a vocal competition for solo performers or group singers 13 years and older.
“Having Taylor Hicks perform at MPAC with the winners of our first Mash Up vocal competition is the perfect vehicle for our new annual campaign highlighting our amazing local talent,” says MPAC director David Taylor. “Taylor’s rise to stardom is the same as what some of the contestants at the Mash Up might be able to claim by winning, and we want the McKinney Performing Arts Center to be the venue that launched these new stars’ career.”
On May 24, 2006, television history was made when 36.4 million viewers tuned in and 63 million votes were cast to name Hicks the Season 5 winner of American Idol. That phenomenal moment launched Hicks’ career as one of America’s favorite performing artists appearing in concerts world wide.
Hicks, who hails from Birmingham, Alabama was destined for the musical stage from early childhood. His personal twist of fate came when he was in New Orleans, the night before Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005. With his flight cancelled, he was given a free airplane voucher. Taylor quickly used the ticket to travel to Las Vegas – where coincidentally American Idol auditions were being held.
Hicks’ material, with a unique take on southern soul, R&B, country and blues, set him apart from other American Idol contestants and earned him a legion of fans from across the country, endearingly called the Soul Patrol.
Since winning American Idol, Hicks’ debut album went RIAA certified platinum; he has performed with the likes of Willie Nelson, Snoop Dog, Gladys Knight, Earth Wind and Fire and The Allman Brothers; appeared in national touring Broadway productions; and penned a brisk-selling Random House autobiography; “Heart Full of Soul.”
Winners from the McKinney Mash Up will perform as the opening entertainment to Hicks’ concert at MPAC. The winners will be selected from competitions occurring the previous weekend. On September 10, solo and group singers obtaining the most on-line votes will compete in a live contest for $2,500 in cash prizes.
Contestants may enter their audition videos beginning July 1. Detailed information about the Mash Up is available at MPAC and TSB‘s websites. Stay connected with the MASH UP all summer long by becoming fans of MPAC and TownSquareBuzz.com on Facebook.
