McKinney’s 18-year-old singing sensation will be hitting the road with the Top-10 finalists from American Idol.
That was decided Thursday night when the final cut was made to narrow the contestants to the final 10, which qualify for the American concert tour during the summer. Hollie Cavanagh didn’t learn her fate until about 7:50 p.m., 50 minutes into the hourlong live FOX television show, but it was certainly worth the wait.
“After a nationwide vote … ” host Ryan Seacrest said, milking the dramatic pause for all it’s worth, “Hollie, you’re going on tour. You are safe!”
It capped a great week for the 2011 McKinney Boyd graduate, who got rave reviews from the judges after belting out “The Power of Love,” a No. 1 hit in 1993, Hollie’s birth year, by Celine Dion.
During Thursday’s show, Idol coach Jimmy Iovine reacted to Hollie’s performance the night before by saying, “I gave Hollie straight-A’s last night. She was fantastic.” Iovine went on to say, “I think she’s going to do great in this competition.”
Ironically, the only thing Iovine didn’t like about Hollie’s Wednesday performance was her long, evening dress.
“The only place it was flawed is the way they dressed her,” he said. “They dressed her too old. She’s only 18!”
It will be interesting to see what song she sings and what outfit she wears next week, especially since Idol announced that Tommy Hilfiger has joined the show as its Image Advisor.
America’s lowest vote total this week went to 16-year-old Shannon Magrane, the 6-foot-tall daughter of former Major League Baseball pitcher Joe Magrane. She graciously bowed out, even though her elimination is among the toughest — the final one before the top 10 summer tour is finalized.
