American Idol Shows TSB’s Hollie Cavanagh Watch Party Footage

By Steve Kirk, TSB Editor

Video footage taken by TownSquareBuzz.com at last week’s Hollie Cavanagh watch party at Jack’s Pub was shown during Wednesday’s episode of American Idol.

TSB marketing director Matt Bado shot the footage on April 4. It was shown briefly near the beginning and later prior to Hollie’s performance during the two-hour Fox TV show, which stressed how much support the seven finalists are receiving in their hometowns.

“Things back home are getting pretty crazy,” Hollie said to Idol host Ryan Seacrest during the live TV show. “In McKinney, they’re having a watching party every week. This nice lady who owns a fudge place has made Hollie Pops.”

Hollie’s father also said in a recorded interview that they’re having watching parties in England for Hollie, too. Hollie was born in Liverpool before her family moved to the U.S. She is a 2011 graduate of McKinney Boyd.

For Wednesday’s live performance, Hollie chose the song “Perfect” by Pink. The songs this week had to be recorded since 2010. The judges were once again lukewarm in their praise of Cavanagh.

“It wasn’t perfect but it was a lot better than where you were last week,” judge Randy Jackson said. “You definitely helped to redeem yourself a little bit this week.”

The judges were more harsh last week after her rendition of  “What a Feeling” by Irene Cara. This week, Jackson seemed to like her performance more than fellow judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

“I feel you fighting and wanting to be perfect,” Lopez said. “It’s not always about that. You sang beautifully tonight. You should be very proud of yourself. We’ll see how it all pans out. I’m rooting for you.”

Tyler, as has become typical of his comments about Hollie, was less than complimentary.

“It wasn’t perfect tonight for me,” Tyler said. “Kinda laid there a little bit for me, compared to how you usually sing. But you look good tonight, girl.”

Guest coach Akon told Hollie during practice this week that, “There comes a time when you go from being an amateur to a pro. It hits you like a bolt of lightning.” And that’s what Idol coach Jimmy Iovine has been trying to get her to do for weeks — loosen up, quit thinking and, in his words, stop making it look like a “high school performance.”

She also sang “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson in a trio with Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet. Hollie said she and Ledet are best friends and Sanchez jokingly called herself a “third wheel” around those other two.

The judges talked about all the “big voices” up there for that song.

“It was beautiful, nice going,” Tyler said.

Hollie admitted Wednesday that she thought she was going to be eliminated last week, when DeAndre Brackensick went home instead.

“When I was in bottom three again I really, honestly thought was gonna go home,” Hollie said. “I was so scared. I have to start fresh.”

That’s why she chose the song “Perfect,” which includes the line, “Pretty, pretty, please, don’t you ever, ever feel that you’re less than perfect.”

No, it wasn’t perfect. The judges made that clear.

But, as Jackson put it, “Listen, you can sing. You’ve got that big voice when you hit those big notes. You’re so much better than you were last week, so you’ve got to be proud of that.”

Hollie will learn her fate tonight at 7 in the live Idol elimination show on Fox.
