Allen Community Theatre Closes Season with ‘The Dixie Swim Club’

Submitted by Allen Community Theatre

Allen’s Community Theatre closes out its 2012-13 season with laughter, fun and life-long besties! The Dixie Swim Club by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten spans many years in the lives of five Southern women who have been best friends since they were on the same swim team in college and meet up once a year in their favorite beach house to reconnect. And reconnecting for this bunch is always full of surprises.

The show is directed by Janette Oswald, Column Award Nominee, and will run Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, and Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4 with two shows on the 4th. ACT is again thrilled to perform at the historic Allen Christian Church located in Allen Heritage Village.

Every August, Sheree Hollinger, the perennial team caption played by Kathleen Vaught, organizes an activity filled weekend for this active group at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. In addition to catching up, reminiscing, and laughter, there is plenty of fodder for meddling in each other’s lives. Lexie Richards, played by Nancy Lubertazzo, is the true Southern Belle of the group and has all of the nips, tucks, and husbands to prove it. Dinah Grayson, Sherri Small, is career obsessed and always at the ready with a wise-crack. Vernadette Simms, Leigh Moore, seems to be a hard luck case, if there ever was one and has learned to not let much ruffle her feathers – except maybe someone infringing upon her biscuit rights. Then there is the ray of sunshine to round out the quintet – Jeri Neal McFeeley played by Maxine Frauenheim. A former nun, Jeri Neal brings about some of the most shocking surprises!

The Dixie Swim Club spans thirty-three years of these special weekends. As we watch their lives unfold, an ever-increasing reliance on one another develops through advice and raucous repartee. Together they get through the challenges of men, sex, marriage, parenting, divorce, and aging – whatever that life flings their way! These friends prove the enduring power of their bond and teamwork to rally around each other – even facing the most difficult of circumstances.

You’ll laugh in unison with the Pemberton College Champion Swim Team and you might even shed a tear or two as they take this comedy in a poignant direction. This story of five unforgettable Southern women will warm your heart and remind you that some friendships just last forever.

The curtain goes up at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 26 and 27and May 3 and 4 with a bonus matinee on May 4th starting at 3 p.m. Performances will be at the Allen Christian Church, Allen Heritage Village, 450 St. Mary Drive in Allen. Ticket prices range from $15 (general)/$13 (age 65+)/$10 (under 18).
