Submitted by Scott Sanford, State Representative
This last few days have been very exciting in Austin, and I wanted to update you on some good legislation which is making its way through the legislative process.
On Saturday, legislation which I co-authored H.B. 47 and H.B. 48 passed through the House of Representatives. These two bills update requirements concerning concealed hand gun licenses, and they make it easier for Texans to obtain their license.
Another bill, H.B. 1314, which I co-authored also passed the House of Representatives. This bill seeks to prevent the encroachment by the federal government on Second Amendment rights. The bill prevents the enforcement of federal laws that exceed the federal government’s constitutional authority by creating a new offense for the unlawful seizure of a firearm.
We have spent significant time here in the legislature to defend our 2nd Amendment rights. We have also been able to reach across the Capitol to work with the Senate on this important issue. Just last week the Senate passed S.B. 1907, which is endorsed by the NRA. This bill prohibits public and private colleges and universities from adopting or enforcing policies banning students who are Concealed Handgun Licensees (CHLs) from transporting and storing handguns and ammunition in their privately-owned motor vehicles while driving through or parking on campus. I thank Senator Paxton for his support of this bill. Allowing students to keep their firearms locked in their vehicles is a positive step for our state, and I look forward to voting for this bill when it comes to the House of Representatives.
