Now that the 83rd Legislative Regular Session has come to a close, we are able to tally up our conservative wins as well as opportunities we must address in future sessions.
Some of our major wins involve:
– Reducing the number of hours for Concealed Handgun License (CHL) renewals
– Reducing excessive testing requirements for schools
– Ensuring actuarial soundness for the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) which allows for first cost of living adjustment in twelve years
– Stopping expansion of Obamacare
Additionally, I was able to pass H.B. 3914 creating the Old Celina Municipal Management District. This legislation will spur a one billion dollar economic development project in our county. I was proud to work with the City of Celina’s leadership to pass a piece of legislation which we all could agree upon.
In May I was able to collaborate with the City of McKinney, Governor Perry, and many other community leaders to bring Raytheon’s Space and Airborne Systems headquarters to McKinney. My values are fighting for good jobs, strong families and a safe community. Raytheon providing more jobs to this community helps to complete that equation.
In the next session we must continue to fight for pro-life legislation, sensible budget spending, and 2nd Amendment legislation. During the session no pro-life legislation made it to a vote in the House Chamber, our budget included excessive spending (for this reason I opposed the budget), and campus carry and open carry bills died.
Now, we are in the First Called Special Session of the 83rd Legislative Session, and Governor Perry has asked us to tackle redistricting, transportation infrastructure, and pro-life issues. I am proud to say that I was one of numerous legislators who urged the Governor to call us back to pass meaningful pro-life legislation. Many states in our Nation look to Texas to lead the charge on pro-life issues, and it is vital that we continue to fight for life.
