By Jeff Leach, State Representative
Last week I proudly filed House Bill 1533, The Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act, establishing Texas Independence Day (March 2) as a tax-free holiday, exempting individuals’ purchase of firearms and hunting
supplies in the State of Texas from sales taxes.
The following items are eligible for tax exemption under the Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act:
· Shotguns, rifles, pistols, revolvers, and other handguns
· Gun cleaning supplies, gun cases, gun safes, and optics
· Archery equipment
· Hunting stands, blinds and decoys
As your State Representative and advocate in the Texas Legislature, I believe it is my duty to preserve and protect our Second Amendment Right to Bear Arms by making Texas the leader in the fight against Washington, D.C.’s attempts to infringe on this precious constitutional right. The Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act encourages lawful gun ownership while spurring economic growth in Texas, ultimately benefitting taxpayers and small business owners. In 2009 similar legislation was passed in Louisiana, and HB 1533 gives Texas a more competitive advantage by encouraging
Texans to spend their money at home.
Endorsed by the National Rifle Association and the Texas Retailers Association, House Bill 1533 is Joint Authored by Representative Phil King, Representative and Speaker Pro Tem Dennis Bonnen, Representative Dan Flynn and Representative Jonathan Stickland. With over 25 Co-Authors, I am proud of the bi-partisan support this legislation has received.
