It’s time to register for the Run for Cover, a one-day event benefitting the Samaritan Inn, Collin County’s only homeless shelter. This exciting family event is April 14 at 7:45 am at Stonebridge Ranch Beach Club in McKinney. It includes a 1K walk/run, 5K and 10K USATF sanctioned runs.
The entire family can walk or jog the Family 1K or 5K events. For those who take running seriously, it’s good to know that the 5- and 10K courses wind through Stonebridge Ranch and are fun, challenging and certified. Prizes and awards will be given to the overall male and female winners in the 5- and 10K. Age group awards will be in 5-year increments. Every participant in the 1K will receive a finisher’s medal. Run for Cover utilizes chip timing and this year will have custom tech running shirts (guaranteed if you pre-register). The run goes on every year, rain or shine. If none of these race categories fit you, there is one called “Sleep in” – you can “register” and make a flat donation to help the Samaritan Inn.
This event is hosted by 3e McKinney, an organization of churches and groups that work in cooperation with each other to share resources, bring honor to God, hope to the impoverished, and make a positive impact on the community. In addition to raising needed funds for the Samaritan Inn, this year volunteers are collecting gently used shoes (in good to excellent condition) to help benefit the men, women and children in need at the Redbud Apartments in McKinney.
The Samaritan Inn is the only shelter in Collin County for people experiencing homelessness. The mission of The Samaritan Inn is to provide a comprehensive program that helps willing people regain their dignity and independence. Intense case management and life skill classes lead to 72 percent of the residents leaving the Samaritan Inn with full-time employment and housing. This is a program with real impact on the people in our area.
